It looks like too many people were signing up at the same time, and there's also an issue we found with the DB which we are fixing, so likely won't happen again.
All of the above. Also we're sending more and more invites and so far the site has scaled OK, and we're not 100% sure the main bottleneck will be (my guess is CPU).
